Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that it will discontinue its 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine after next year. The engine that replaces it is the new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 already seen in the Mercedes-AMG GT. It will also power the upcoming new C63.
Despite being introduced only in 2011 and highly praised for its power, throttle response and sound, the M157 motor will be replaced by the smaller engine. Despite its smaller proportions, the new engine delivers increased power, better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
The 5.5-litre engine will be used in the forthcoming GLE Coupé, revealed at the Detroit motor show, and then, will be last seen in the convertible version of the S-class coupé, which will debut in international markets in 2016.
