Maruti, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota post smart sales

Fiscal year 2015-16 is off to a great start for the top industry players, with sales figures in April displaying a rise from 2014. The manufacturers that earned increased sales include Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota.

Maruti Suzuki India clocked a 27 percent growth in April 2015 with sales of 1,00,709 cars (April 2014: 79,119). The Alto and Wagon R together sold 35,403 units, up 36 percent from April 2014's 26,043 units. The Swift, Ritz, Celerio, and Dzire sold a combined 42,297 units, up 8.7 percent (April 2014: 38,926), while the Ciaz sold over 4,000 units. The Omni and Eeco sold a total of 12,069 units, up 45 percent. The models that reflected a decline from last year were the Ertiga MPV, along with the Gypsy and Grand Vitara, selling 4,452 units, an 11 percent drop from the 5,011 units sold in April 2014.

Honda Cars India, recorded domestic sales of 12,636 units in April 2015, up 14 percent (April 2014: 11,040). The sales comprised 8,203 Citys, 2,862 Amaze sedans, 827 Brios, 689 Mobilios and 55 CR-Vs. Hyundai Motor India registered domestic sales of 38,601 units last month, up 9.5 percent (April 2014: 35,248). Mahindra & Mahindra’s passenger vehicles division which includes UVs and the Verito, recorded a growth of 1 percent, selling 18,314 units in April 2015 (April 2014: 18,148 units). Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle division recorded sales of 10,230 units, a growth of 37 percent (April 2014: 7,441), thanks to the Zest saloon and Bolt hatchback.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor documented a sale of 12,325 units in April 2015, a 63 percent increase from the 7,562 units sold in April 2014. Export sales recorded a 74 percent year-on-year growth with the company selling 1,334 units in April 2015. The carmaker has been registering a double-digit growth, month-on-month, since January. Overall, a 36 percent growth in the domestic market is seen in the period from January to April 2015, when compared to the same period in 2014.
 FY2014-15 registered a total of 1.8 million units in passenger car sales, registering a year-on-year growth of 4.99 percent. Utility vehicles saw 5.3 percent growth (553,699) and vans a 10.19 percent decline (171,395).

Skoda Vision RS concept previews new hatchback

Skoda has set the stage for its forthcoming Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus rival with the Vision RS, a concept car that features a performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. Under the sporty details and concept flourishes, the Vision RS bears a close resemblance to the Rapid hatchback that will be introduced next year. The fact that it has been previewed in vRS form, complete with 245hp PHEV powertrain, shows how much further upmarket the new Rapid will go compared with the current value-led model.
