Not even half way through the year and the Indian car market has seen a host of new entries that included cars from the luxury segment such as the BMW i8 to cars in the hatchback segment like the Celerio ZXi AMT. However the year is still far from over for manufacturers with many mainstream launches planned for the months to come.
Ford Figo Aspire
Ford’s compact sedan, the Figo Aspire is expected to launch sometime in June. The Figo Aspire will be powered by a new 1.2-litre petrol engine and Ford’s tried-and-tested 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Fiesta and EcoSport. It will also be offered with the option of a six-speed double clutch automatic gearbox and six-airbags.
Hyundai Creta (July 21)
Hyundai’s EcoSport rival, the Creta, has been spotted testing on Indian roads over a few months. The car is expected to go on sale sometime in July, featuring the familiar 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and the 1.6-litre diesel unit. Inside it is expected to offer a feature-rich cabin like with all Hyundais along with the good build quality.
BMW X6 (July 23)
The second-gen BMW X6 will be launched on July 23. The new SUV is larger and taller than its predecessor, and gets new front and rear-end styling. However, the overall silhouette remains unchanged. Inside, the SUV gets a restyled dashboard and seats along with better-quality trim.
Mahindra Thar facelift (July)
The facelifted Mahindra Thar features interior and exterior styling changes. The exterior sees minor changes like a new front bumper and a canopy that seems tilted from the back. The interiors look more premium with parts being shared with the Bolero. The mechanicals remain unchanged from the current Thar.
Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG (July 30)
Another Mercedes coming to India this year is the powerful and luxurious S 63 AMG. Featuring an aggressive AMG kit, lowered suspension, AMG wheels and AMG embossed interiors, the powerful sibling of the standard S-class will be powered by a 5.5-litre hand-crafted twin-turbo V8 pushing out 577bhp and 91.77kgm of torque.
Maruti S-Cross
The S-Cross is expected to launch sometime later this year and will rival the likes of the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Under the hood, the S-Cross gets a Fiat- sourced 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines. Though sold internationally with a four-wheel drive variant, the India spec car will not be offered with the option.
Land Rover Discovery Sport (August)
Land Rover will be replacing its Freelander 2 with the new Discovery Sport that will be launched soon. The Sport will be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine in two states of tune – 187bhp and 147bhp – which is likely to be replaced by the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel motor in the near future.
Abarth 595 (August)
The halo model for Abarth in India, the 595 is the performance version of the Abarth 500 and will go on sale when Fiat launches the brand. The 595 will be powered by a more powerful version of the 1.4-litre T-Jet engine with output rated at 158bhp. The 595 will be brought in to India as a CBU.
Fiat Punto Evo Abarth
Fiat will be launching its performance brand, Abarth, in India. The brand will see the introduction of three performance models. One of them is the Punto Evo Abarth. This performance Punto will be powered by a 135bhp 1.4-litre T-Jet engine along with disc brakes all round, Abarth graphics and badges, added exterior detailing, a new suspension and new wheels.
Fiat Avventura Abarth
The second of the three models from Fiat is the performance version of the Avventura. The Avventura will remain unchanged from its standard variant, but will get the addition of the 135bhp T-Jet motor from the Punto Evo Abarth.
Maruti Ertiga facelift
The facelifted version of the Maruti Ertiga MPV will make its debut at the Indonesian motor show in August, before making its way to India. The car is expected to get exterior styling changes, and the interior will include additional features and new upholstery.
Ford Figo
The all-new Ford Figo hatchback will be powered by the updated 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines from the Figo Aspire sedan and is expected to share interior styling with the sedan as well. The car will also share its front end styling with the Aspire sedan.
Ford Endeavour
Ford will be launching its new Endeavour in India sometime this year. The new car gets rugged styling with a large trapezoidal chrome grille, daytime running lamps, scuff plates, large and prominent wheel arches and wheels, along with chrome detailing on door handles and wing mirror covers. The Endeavour will also get an upgrade on the inside. An 8-inch touchscreen system with Ford’s SYNC 2 infotainment along with sat nav and a rear-view camera on the top variant, and a seven seat configuration are offered. Power is expected to be derived from a 2.2-litre 158bhp and a 197bhp 3.2-litre diesel engines and a choice of six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.
Mercedes-Benz GLE-class
The facelift of the current M-class, the GLE-class is expected to make its way to the Indian subcontinent by the year end. The GLE-class gets styling more in tune with Mercedes’ new design language as seen in the new C-class and S-class — a similar grille and headlamp units. Internationally it gets new engine options, though for India it will likely carry on with the existing engines in the M-class.
Mercedes-AMG GT
Mercedes will be launching the SLS successor, the AMG GT, in India later this year. The AMG GT is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo AMG V8. Internationally, the car is available in two guises — the standard GT developing 456bhp and the GT S developing 503bhp. The version that's heading to India is still unconfirmed.
Ford Mustang
Internationally, the Ford Mustang is available with three engine options — a 306bhp 2.3-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, a 296bhp 3.7-litre V6, and a 429bhp 5.0-litre V8; and in two versions – coupĂ© and drop-top. India is expected to get the coupĂ© version of the iconic car, but sadly we don’t know which engine.
Nissan GT-R
Nissan is expected to launch its iconic GT-R supercar by the end of the year. The car, built to fine tolerances and with high levels of precision, is powered by a hand-assembled 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6. In terms of performance, the supercar could put some Ferraris and Porsche to shame.
